Research and Development FEA Engineer
Join iCOMAT – Revolutionising the Future of Lightweight Manufacturing!
ICOMAT is an advanced manufacturing company with game changing technology that delivers the lightest structures possible for aerospace and automotive, at a scale, rate and cost efficiency that far exceeds existing composite production processes.
We have ensured iCOMAT is made up of people with the drive and imagination to grow a business that will revolutionise the use of composite materials to enable the next generation of lightweight cars, planes and spacecraft.
We build and operate automated factories for composite materials, delivering components to Tier 1 and OEMs. The business has 3 main divisions that focus on the development of automated production machines, development of software design and production tools and lastly the operation of the factory.
Now working with >25 customers (multiple leading OEMs) and earlier this year we completed the largest ever Series A in composites manufacturing (link) to fuel a significant scale-up with growth plans that will see the business multiply in size over the next 2-3 years and expand operations into Europe and the US.
The business currently has facilities in Gloucester UK (Factory 1), Bristol UK (Hardware R&D Centre) and in Athens GR (Software R&D Centre).
As we scale and grow, we’re looking for talented individuals to help us continue driving this transformation. If you're ready to be part of a pioneering team that’s reshaping industries and pushing the boundaries of technology, we want to hear from you!
We are seeking a highly-skilled, graduate/entry level Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Engineer to join our dynamic team. As a Research & Development FEA Engineer, you will be part of the development of structural analysis methods and tools, to standardise and automate analysis processes and to support the design team in conducting complex FEA simulations. You will also contribute to day-to-day project work with models and FE solutions. Your analytical and programming skills will contribute to the development and improvement of our products and systems, while your FE and composite knowledge will support the design of components based on iCOMAT technology. The ideal candidate has a strong background in FE structural analysis and design optimisation, and a passion for delivering high-quality engineering solutions.
What will you be doing?
- Develop improved analysis methodologies, tools, and processes, driving innovation and efficiency within the engineering team.
- Perform advanced finite element analysis (FEA) simulations, using software tools such as Abaqus, or similar, to evaluate the structural integrity, performance, and behaviour of complex mechanical systems.
- Support the development and validation of FEA models, ensuring accuracy, reliability, and adherence to industry standards and best practices.
- Research and implement state of the art methodologies, processes and tools.
- Develop high-quality programming code to standardise and automate engineering analysis workflows and design optimisation studies.
- Identify needs and opportunities in terms of structural analysis and design optimisation capabilities.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including design engineers, software developers and manufacturing engineers.
- Stay current with industry trends, advancements, and emerging technologies related to finite element analysis, participating in professional development activities and continuously enhancing your technical expertise.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards in all analysis and design activities.
What do we need from you?
- Master's degree in Mechanical/Structural Engineering or a related field. A Ph.D. in a relevant discipline is preferred.
- 0-3 years’ experience in finite element analysis, including hands-on expertise in using FEA software tools such as Abaqus, or similar.
- Strong understanding of structural mechanics, material properties, and failure mechanisms for composite components.
- Familiarity/experience with coding/programming
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to think critically, identify root causes, and propose innovative solutions.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts in a clear and concise manner.
- Proficiency in English
Desired:
- Excellent Python programming skills.
- Experience with implementing design optimisation algorithms and using optimisation code libraries and/or commercial tools for engineering applications.
